I had the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the new cookbook "Gather: The Art of Paleo Entertaining" by Hayley Mason and Bill Staley of The Food Lovers Kitchen. Hayley and Bill's first cookbook, "Make it Paleo", was one of my first Paleo cookbooks and many of the recipes have become a staple in my kitchen. So, I was thrilled to learn about the release of this new cookbook! The first impression that struck me about "Gather" is that it is a truly gorgeous cookbook that can double as a conversation piece because of the striking photography. Hayley and Bill photographed all of the delicious Paleo dishes in such a way that makes you start salivating just by flipping through the pages. "Gather" is a cookbook that you will definitely want to share with your friends and family who may be skeptical of the Paleo lifestyle.
The book also serves as a guide on how to plan the meal around gatherings and special occasions. Seventeen unique themes for the entire year are detailed, including such events as Springtime Tea Party, Tropical Getaway, Spooky Supper, and Hunter-Gatherer Feast. The book specifies what types of table decorations and place settings to shop for, the timeline for preparing the dishes, and what to do once your guests arrive in order to make the gathering come together seamlessly. My personal theme favorite at the moment is Takeout Fake-Out, which includes Paleo versions of popular Chinese dishes. And to think that I once believed that General Tso's chicken was a dish to be fondly remembered, but to remain only in my pre-Paleo past!
There are 100 recipes in "Gather" and you can mix and match dishes from different themes as you see fit. Here are just a few of the dishes to give you an idea of the variety included in the cookbook:
- Sweet Potato Hash with Rosemary
- Zucchini Bread
- Honey Glazed Ham
- No'tato Salad
- Chocolate Chip Biscotti
- Green Bean Salad with Artichoke Hearts and Olives
- Stuffed Red Snapper
- Pumpkin Chicken Chili
- Mini Chocolate Martinis
"Gather" not only has tons of inspiration for day-to-day cooking, but for the first time since I've become Paleo, it has me excited about hosting a completely Paleo gathering of my own. And I have no concerns that the guests could possibly miss the gluten or grains!
